Come and meet Vamille
Vamille, whose real name is Camille Vallotton, is a comic book author and illustrator based in Fribourg.
Since childhood, telling stories through drawing was a natural choice that ultimately led Camille, after a winding path, to choose illustration and comics as her profession.
In 2013, she enrolled at HEAD-Genève in the images and narratives section (currently Illustration and Comics). During her studies, she won the public prize at the Dessinateur de demain competition at the BDFil festival in 2014. At the end of her studies, she spent six months in the Netherlands for an internship at Joost Swarte's studio in Haarlem.
In 2016, she received the Töpffer Prize for young comic artists from the Canton of Geneva for her graduation comic Speculum Mortis. This work was published at the end of 2018 by the publishing house Hélice Hélas. She subsequently published several children's books and comics with various publishers in Switzerland, France, and South Korea.
In 2021, she embarked on a semi-autobiographical comic project titled Fleurs intestinales and reached the top six in the international comic competition of the Prix Raymond Leblanc in Belgium. This allowed her to refine her application for a Pro Helvetia grant for comic creation and also to sign a contract with the publishing house Sarbacane. This project is set to be released in 2024.
At the same time, the desire to fulfill a childhood dream grew stronger. After a few years of patience, it was at the beginning of 2023 that Vamille flew to Japan for an artistic residency. She felt the urge to reconnect with her early readings, manga, which made her fall in love with the medium of comics.
Having received a mobility grant for artistic creation from the Canton of Fribourg, she spent three months mainly in Tokyo, where she created the first chapter of a manga titled Uogokoro areba mizugokoro - the story of Sakana Kid, blending Western comics and manga in a silent narrative. The project was exhibited in Tokyo at the artist residency gallery 'Almost Perfect' in March 2023. The continuation is currently in progress.
